Magazine Production.

Magazine Photoshoot. We wanted our main image on the magazine cover to be of the antagonist, 'Nero Azariel' or Romyn Sharma. We decided that for this cover he would not be in character as it is most common to see the actor in his own casual form rather than in the character of the role that they play in the film.
We chose to have him dressed in a smart/casual outfit of a shirt and tie but without the suit jacket which he is seem wearing in the teaser trailer; deciding that the composition and pose should compliment this casual look. We asked him to pose in a way that would make him seem happy and friendly; as if the interview inside the magazine would reflect a nice person rather than the evil man that he is seen to be in the teaser-trailer. We captured images of him smiling and laughing to do so. The lighting techniques used for magazine covers usually conform to one select style; very well lit with minimalistic shadows, so we used two large soft lights either side of him and one light in front to create catch-lights in his eyes. |

Antagonist VS Actor. When deciding on what kind of picture we would be going for, we had to think about what kind of style we were trying to portray. The thing we had to think about was whether or not we wanted to have Romyn as his character Nero Azariel, or have him as Romyn the actor. We decided to go with the latter as we were going for a more relaxed look for the magazine. We wanted to have an interview with the actor rather than the character as it is a convention of a magazine to have an inside look at the person who is the character on screen. The serious look on Romyn as Nero Azariel did not fit in well with what we were trying to accomplish, and so asked him to convey his off screen persona in a way that would show it was an interview with him, rather than his character. For this reason we decided to use Romyn laughing and holding his tie, giving a more playful feel to the magazine.

Similar Genre Films for Features. When deciding on what would make our magazine stand out more, we decided to create features that would help reinforce the fact that our genre was sci-fi. To work towards showing this idea we researched for different sci-fi films; past, present and future, to help with the overall sci-fi theme. For the past we decided to have a feature where we would interview Harrison Ford and catch up with him, 30 years on from "Blade Runner". For the present we decide to have a feature that would take the audience behind the scenes of "Looper", and so we used a picture of Joseph Gordon-Levitt in character in the film "Looper". For the future, we researched for films that are coming out in 2013/14 that are the same genre as ours. We found out that Brad Pitt was coming in a film called "World War Z", Will Smith in "After Earth" and Tom Cruise in "Oblivion", all these films linking to our genre and narrative in one way or another. What this did was help us to set the theme for our poster and help to strengthen our narrative, but also helped us to create the magazine in a way that it would look professional and incorporate our genre of sci-fi.

Creating The Magazine Cover

Changing The Text. The final piece to our magazine was the text that was going to go beside Romyn's picture. After our research we saw that is was something related to the picture, and gave an indication as to what that feature was in the actual magazine. For this reason we went with "Inside!" to give an indication to the audience that what was inside the magazine was about Romyn. We then added phrases in bullet points that told us about what the content was. However, after coming back to it we realised that it just did not fit and did not look like it was the right style and layout for it. For this reason, we went back to one of our research magazine covers and saw a style that we liked and tried to emulate it oursleves. We went with the "box" layout, trying to keep things in a square, resizing and stretching them so that they would fit in. In the end we thought that this looked much better;as it was easier to read and it looked more professional than the bullet point one we had before.
